The Richland Springs Report

Many of you had a first-time look at the pictures I’ve been describing regarding my trip to Costa Rica. I think they tell my story well. The photo of the wave hitting me from behind is perfect. I believe they call those sneaker waves. They are larger waves that follow a series of smaller waves and wipe everyone out.

Fortunately, other than a few sore ribs, I suffered no broken bones. I had a great time.

I passed the Men’s Breakfast Saturday around eight in the morning, and they had a great turnout. Remember, this event is open to all men in the community. Many men bring their sons to have a little bonding time. The food is delicious, the company great, and the atmosphere relaxing and fun. I hope more men can come the next time. Mark your calendars for the second Saturday of the month at 7: 00 a.m.

Meet the teachers night was packed. Thank you, parents, for supporting your school. I watched my first girls’ volleyball game, and I can’t begin to tell you how entertaining it was. I’m not a judge of how good they or their opponents were, but it was fun to watch.

The football scrimmage also went well. Everyone is careful about the heat factor, but there was enough action to make the strictest fan happy. I saw from the schedule that there are more home games this year than we normally have. Ladies, get your cooking skills honed as we will have four home games for Fifth Quarter. We may have to adjust our meals for the temperature.

Speaking of meals, I saw my sickly plants waving around in the garden, and there was no wind. So I walked over, and there was a squirrel carrying away a small green tomato. It’s bad enough that the excessive heat has killed just about everything in the garden that could live; now the animals are harvesting what little is being produced. I guess I should just let the garden go. The deer are eating my roses and Chrissy’s pumpkins, grasshoppers are eating all my other plants, and the heat is killing the grass. It has been a rough summer. The Almanac says winter is not going to be good either.

All I know is our farmers and ranchers desperately need soaking rain.

The fires on Maui serve as a reminder that dry ground, heat, and high winds are deadly. Many relief organizations are preparing to go in and help as soon as the area is declared safe. I believe the death count has risen to 90 and is expected to go higher. We have the same circumstances here in Texas, so please be mindful about our fire hazards.

Chrissy and I are working on restoring the ground floor of the Bank building. The plans are to open a community room that will contain a multitude of services and activities. The work is going slowly thanks to our lovely heat wave. Keep your ears open for news as it comes.

I think I have the photo issue solved, so I’m hoping to get more school photos into the paper in the future. Djuana has tried to help me, but I’m pretty sure it is operator error. I want the world to see what great kids we have in Richland Springs.

Prayer requests are in for Johnny Reeves, Donna Hill, Jeremy Young and so many more. Prayers are needed for our country, our legal system, especially the courts, and our government. My last trip to the gas station was not pleasant.

Gas prices are rising rapidly. That means more stress for our ranchers and farmers. Please pray for our students, our teachers, and other school staff. Our firemen need prayers for their safety, police officers as well. Most of all, pray for our precious troops and their families.

I have special birthday wishes for my daughter Chrissy, granddaughter Kaitlynn, and great-granddaughter Halen, all born on either the 13th or 14th of August.

Stay cool everyone.
