The Richland Springs Report

October is football weather this year. Friday night’s game against Rochelle was nippy for sure. There have been years when it was still ugly out, but not this year. I had to stop and buy a hoodie from the booster club. Rochelle fought hard and made it a four-quarter game, but our boys prevailed. Football in Texas is a different animal. Folks in towns across Texas are deeply and passionately involved in high school football. Mr. Womack reads the advisory from UIL to remind adults to support members from both teams and respect the officials. It’s a very worthy speech, and most adults understand and support the athletes on the field. Let’s not forget that it’s kids playing, not pro athletes. Most fans have a great night out even if their teams doesn’t win. That’s how it should be. Congratulations to all our high school Friday night football stars. The final score was 56-24 for Richland.

The Varsity cross country ladies will be heading to regionals. Rylie Eckert, Reagan Eckert, and Kinsley Daly will represent our school. The Junior High girls made a podium sweep: Macy Mask 1st; Grace Younggreen, 2nd; Kaylee Salas, 3rd. Congratulations to all these beautiful young ladies.

Chrissy and I are hard at work on the bank building again. Some wonderful person gave the Preservation Society a donation that will help with the roof situation. Donations are always welcome.

The leadership under Jason Lewis is working to raise the $40,000-$55,000 needed to totally repair the roof. That seems like an impossible goal, but they are not daunted. In the meantime, Chrissy and I are painting and sprucing up this charming old historic building. Jacki Basquette is keeping her RS BoHo Unique up to date and appealing. The committee is working on making the bank itself a mini museum. We need to get the upstairs cleaned so there will be less weight on the ceiling. Some visitors might say why bother, but as I see the rooms begin to show life, it makes me happy.

The monthly Men’s Breakfast at the Tabernacle went well. This week they had a visitor from the past. Mr. Brown is back in town and is politicking for office. There were less men attending perhaps thanks to the cooler weather.

We’re just a short time away from the big fall trade day event at the Feed Lot. The list of vendors both local and out of town has grown quite lengthy guaranteeing an interesting day for our visitors. The food vendors caught my attention. The Elkin kids will be providing some of the entertainment for the day. At the end of the month, the school will hold its fall festival.

Let’s give a big shout out to Jasper Farris, the 2023 bareback champion of the Founders Invitational Championships this weekend. I used to worry about Jasper when he was in my fifthgrade class when he set off for Las Vegas and the championships there. He has increased in strength and skill, but I still worry about this tough cowboy. Congratulations, Jaspur.

Our hearts and prayers are with the Israeli people and the hundreds of hostages taken by the terrorists. Please pray for a quick end to their captivity. Lord, we pray for peace to come to the Middle East, and Israel in particular. We pray for our southern border and the hundreds of thousands of illegals who are entering our country. Please protect our communities and people. Johnny Reeves is doing well with his chemo. Our prayers continue for him and Lynn. Lesa Landrum is doing better after her most recent surgery. Donna Hill continues to need healing for her eyes. Jeremy Young is doing much better, but his dad Carl needs prayers. John McKinnerney is recovering from a recent bout of sickness. There are many more who need our prayers. Please pray for Coach Ethridge, our school and students who are dealing with bouts of flu or covid. We are in your hands, Lord.

Thank you for the cooler weather, but we pray for good hard rain. Most of all pray for our precious troops and their families. Have a blessed week everyone.
