Hosted By Fredericksburg Music Club
A program of works ranging from “Ave Maria” and “Nearer My God To Thee” to “Shenandoah” and “Drunken Sailor” will mark a concert featuring the male vocal group IlluMen here Sunday, April 21, during the seventh of eight 2023-2024 monthly events hosted by the Fredericksburg Music Club.
Seating for the 3 p.m. concert in the sanctuary of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, 1800 North Llano, will begin at 2:30 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. The performance is free, although goodwill offerings are welcome.
Billed as “a premier men’s professional chorus”, IlluMen is composed of 10 San Antonio area performers whose group was formed in 2012 by a handful of charter members.
“While most large cities have professional symphonies, instrumental chamber ensembles and mixed professional choruses, it’s rare to have an all-professional choral group of men,” said Grant Lyons, artistic director and baritone.
He explained that IlluMen is composed of vocal coaches, choir teachers, opera singers and other musical professionals, all of whom seek to display characteristics of spirituality, friendship and a strong desire to advance music in education, service and performance.
“IlluMen is dedicated to instilling in all people an awareness of music’s important role in the enrichment of the human spirit,” Lyons said.
Joining him on stage for the April 21 concert will be Jordan D. Boyd (baritone), Christian N. Cruz (tenor 1), Leo Garcia (tenor 2), Carson Koch (bass 2), Alexander Montalvo (tenor 1), Stanley A Moody (bass 2), Vincent Pena (tenor 2), Otoniel Rodriguez (baritone) and Michael Zuniga (baritone).
In all, the group plans to present around 20 selections of choral music on either side of an intermission break.
In addition to freewill offerings given at the door of the April 21 concert, that afternoon’s performance is also being partially funded by donations from members of the Fredericksburg Music Club.
At the afternoon concert, membership cards for individuals or corporate sponsors wishing to join the Fredericksburg Music Club will also be available at the door.
