San Saba High School art students have a busy schedule this April. Saturday, April 27th, is the state Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) in San Marcos. “Texas High School Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2019. The first VASE event was held in 1994 with just over 400 student entries; after 25 years, High School VASE entries number around 35,000. Students create artworks, write about their creative processes and understanding of visual art, and articulate information about their artwork during an interview with a VASE juror, who evaluates their work using a standards-based rubric.” VASE is not divided into districts so students compete against 1A through 6A schools.

San Saba competed in the VASE Regional art competition against 18 schools including San Angelo and Brownwood. There were 269 entries in the regional event. San Saba students received 26 Regional Gold medals. Twenty-one entries won gold medals at the Area event and will go to the state event. Two San Saba students, Gracen Shahan and Emerson Gage, won Area Gold medals, and their artwork is headed to the state event next weekend!

If you are interested in seeing artwork by talented San Saba art students, visit the San Saba Historical Museum for a sampling of student artwork or attend the SecondAnnual StudentArt Show on Monday, April 29th, at San Saba High School. The art show is open to the public from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Parents of art students are invited to attend an award ceremony immediately following the art show. The award ceremony will be held in the High School Cafeteria.
