100 Years Ago January 11, 1923

Mr. S. H. Evans has opened a restaurant and short order stand on the south side of the square in the building formerly occupied by Dad Watson. Mr. Evans came here from Ballinger, but at one time made this place his home.

M. Johnson, of the Bowie Poultry Farm remembered us with a handsome calendar. It bears a Frontispiece 8,000 eggs which were laid in two days by his five thousand hens.

On Tuesday evening at the High SchoolAuditorium, through efforts of the local Ford agent, Mr. M. R. Weatherby, the Ford Motor Co., gave a very interesting and instructive moving picture show. Several days prior to the date of the show, Mr. Weatherby announced that he would give a prize of Ten Dollars to the student writing the best essay on Fordson Farming. The prize was won by Claude Drew, a member of the Freshman class.

A good many people are setting out pecan trees at this time. Mr. W. J. Millican has contracted for quite a number to be delivered this week. Lee Stewart has been digging the holes for these trees. The Star Office has contracted for a pecan tree to be set out in the back lot of the office.

Secretary J. E. Bell of the Chamber of Commerce has received advertising matter from the United States Touring information bureau consisting of maps and literature. Our tourist park is mentioned in it and has a conspicuous place on the map. This is valuable advertising as it has a half million circulation.

70 Years Ago January 8, 1953

Miss Wanda Jewel Scott, daughter of Mrs. Nettie Scott, became the bride of Pvt. Jack R. Turner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Remey Turner of Cedar Creek, in a double ring, semi-formal ceremony performed at the Montana Church of Christ in El Paso.

The San Saba city council passed an ordinance approving Lone Star Gas Company's application for a rate increase in their gas service.

The yard of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. McConnell has been selected as the Yard of the Month for January, according to an announcement by Mrs. B. C. May and Mrs. G. A. Arhelger, co-chairmen of the yard contest committee.

The contract of Sam G. Boynton, superintendent of schools at San Saba since July, 1950, was renewed at a meeting of the school board. The renewal was for a three-year period.

Harry Shapiro, who bought the mens' furnishings part of Walker's Cleaners and Clothiers, has work underway this week joining the building with his own by means of a large archway through the partition wall. He announced this week that he will continue to carry the same line of merchandise formerly sold by Bubba Walker, and that both businesses will be operated as one. The old name of Leader Dry Goods will be changed to Harry's Department Store.

Martin Crutsinger will hold open house at his new Circle-M Dairy barn located about two miles west of the San Saba city limits on the San Saba-to-Richland Springs highway. The tile and concrete barn, built with a view to qualifying as a grade-A dairy, includes a milk room for pasteurization, cooling and bottling; a ready room where the cows are groomed for milking; a milking parlor; and a feed room.

A contingent of some 2,000 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division will participate in the inaugural parade for President-elect Dwight D. Eisenhower in Washington D.C., according to the public information office at Ft. Bragg, N. C. Members of the 82nd became well-known in the San Saba area while here participating in Exercise Long Horn last year.
